Controlled rotation for cylindrical and radial welds

The AL-RD-M holds a workpiece securely and rotates it under the beam in a controlled way, which is what makes continuous circumferential welds possible without the operator constantly repositioning the part. It is the standard answer for shafts, bosses, rotationally symmetric tooling and any job where the weld follows a radius rather than a line.

Why a rotating axis changes the job

Welding around a cylinder by hand means stopping, releasing, rotating and re-clamping — and every one of those stops is a potential defect in the seam. A rotating axis removes them. The part is fixtured once and turns continuously beneath a stationary beam, producing a single uninterrupted weld.

Rotation is driven by a stepper motor and commanded from the joystick, the machine terminal or WINLaser directly, so the operator can match rotation speed to weld speed as the job runs. The axis also tilts through 90° in both directions with 15° indexing, which brings angled and tapered features into the same convenient welding position.

Specifying the right configuration

The choice between the three-jaw chuck and the pneumatic collet comes down to part size and changeover frequency. The chuck takes components up to Ø 125 mm and grips a wide range of shapes; the collet handles Ø 2–30 mm and clamps far faster, which matters when a batch involves hundreds of parts.
