Laser Powder Deposit Welding

AL-PF Powder Feeder

Controlled metal powder delivery for deposition welding

ALPHA LASER AL-PF powder feeder unit with twin powder hoppers

Overview

Controlled metal powder delivery for deposition welding

Laser powder deposit welding is only as good as its powder supply — an inconsistent feed produces an inconsistent layer, and the defect is not visible until the part is machined back. The AL-PF meters powder into the carrier gas stream at a precisely controlled rate, which is what makes repeatable cladding and build-up possible across a whole surface rather than a single test bead.

Metering powder, not just moving it

Powder is delivered by a rotating disc whose speed is continuously adjustable, so the feed rate can be dialled in to the deposition rate rather than selected from fixed steps. The dosing chamber is Plexiglas, which sounds like a small thing until you are three hours into a cladding job and can see at a glance that powder is still flowing evenly.

The touch display folds away when not in use and stores parameter sets, so a proven combination of powder type, disc speed and gas pressure is recalled rather than re-established by trial and error on the next job.

Powder handling in practice

Metal powders are hygroscopic — they pick up moisture from the air, and damp powder feeds unevenly and produces porous deposits. The optional heating pads hold the containers at 60 °C to keep powder dry through a shift, which is worth specifying in most Australian workshops and close to essential in humid coastal locations.

The twin-container option lets two powders be loaded at once, either to switch between materials without emptying and cleaning the unit, or to blend a mix through the optional mixer. GWB can advise on which configuration suits your range of substrate and cladding materials.
